IT transformation in the supplier management of Deutsche Bahn

As part of the Group-wide modernisation of its SAP landscape, Deutsche Bahn will restructure its supplier management and establish the latest market standards in purchasing.

We are gradually replacing our previous system SMaRT (Supplier Management and Rating Tool) with the SAP Business Network, which is already used by many of our suppliers. This changeover is taking place in order to meet future requirements and to future-proof our processes. According to current planning, the transition will begin in Q2 2025, with SMaRT expected to be fully replaced by Q2 2026.

The introduction of these standards should benefit both Deutsche Bahn and its suppliers:

• All DB suppliers can customise their data independently, which increases both transparency and data quality.
• For suppliers who already work with the SAP Business Network, processes are greatly simplified and the effort of working in two systems is eliminated.
• All SAP Business Network functions required for the business relationship with Deutsche Bahn are free of charge

An important note concerning prequalification:

Prequalification is expected to continue to be processed as usual via SMaRT until Q2 2026, including upcoming requalifications. We will inform you in advance when the requalification will be carried out in the SAP Business Network.

The introduction of the SAP Business Network in DB Supplier Management is a strategic step that will help Deutsche Bahn to optimise its supply chains. Despite the challenges associated with the implementation, Deutsche Bahn sees the SAP Business Network as an important tool for supplier management.

Currently, our suppliers do not need to take any action. We will contact you in advance to inform you of the next steps and ensure that the transition goes smoothly. To ensure a successful transition, comprehensive support structures are currently being implemented with the aim of providing you with optimal support during the changeover.
