Market exploration for sustainable seats in DB rail vehicles

Deutsche Bahn (DB) has firmly anchored sustainability in its business strategy. With the green transformation and social responsibility, DB is pursuing a holistic approach to sustainability that encompasses the entire DB Group.

DB aims to be climate-neutral by 2040 and to have implemented a fully circular economy within the DB Group. The sustainable procurement of rail vehicles and rolling stock parts is therefore a central concern in order to minimize environmental impact, protect the climate, use resources efficiently and recycle them, and assume social responsibility - while reducing costs in the long term.

This means that, in future, DB only wants to purchase vehicles and vehicle parts that have been manufactured in a climate- and resource-conserving manner and for which attention has been paid to the use of recycled and recyclable resources.  Through sustainable procurement, DB also strengthens the transparency of the supply chain and promotes fair working conditions in line with its claim to assume social responsibility. In addition to the declared sustainability goals, the requirements for costs, quality and delivery times naturally remain of consistently high importance.

Working together for sustainable rail vehicles with requests for information

UIn order to make DB's fleet viable for the future and to contribute even more to a climate-neutral and circular DB, DB Procurement, DB Fernverkehr and DB Fahrzeuginstandhaltung are carrying out requests for information. These are intended to provide a comprehensive overview of both existing and potential solutions in the rail vehicle value chain. The aim is to use the results to identify innovative and sustainable approaches that can contribute to:

1. minimize environmental impact and greenhouse gas emissions in our upstream value chain,
2. increase the recyclability of our fleet and
3. assume social responsibility in the vehicle supply chain.

We are currently conducting a request for information on sustainable interiors with a focus on seats. We are inviting all market participants along the entire value chain to take part.
